Prehistory Vlad III got his nickname "Ţepeş" - "Impaler" because of the dreadful cruelty to his enemies and his subjects which he impaled on the stakes or crucified on the cross His nickname Dracula (son of the Dragon) was in honor of his father, the Knight of the Order of the Dragon, created by the Emperor Sigismund in 1408. The members of this Order wore a medallion with the image of a Dragon. Vlad's father minted this image on his coins, for which he was nicknamed Dracul - Dragon (or the Devil). His son Vlad in the age of twelve was sent as a hostage to the Turks, where miserable boy spent four years. The psyche of Vlad underwent the dramatic changes in the Turkish captivity. Contemporaries spoke of Vlad III, as a very unstable person with a lot of strange ideas and habits.
